Course Overview

HIV post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is an important prevention tool. This course was created to help practitioners learn how to confidently prescribe HIV PEP in Saskatchewan's Emergency and Urgent Care settings.

Did you know?

  • If indicated, HIV PEP must be started as soon as possible and within 72 hours of a high-risk blood and body fluid exposure (BBFE).
  • HIV PEP 5-day starter kits, 23-day continuation prescriptions, and full 28-day course prescriptions can be prescribed by any physician or nurse practitioner in Saskatchewan.

By the end of this professional development course, the learner will be able to:

  1. Assess patients after blood and body fluid exposure (BBFE) for the risk of HIV transmission
  2. Determine if administration of HIV PEP is recommended and appropriate
  3. Describe how to prescribe HIV PEP in health care settings in Saskatchewan
  4. Counsel patients on HIV PEP side effects
  5. Describe necessary HIV PEP follow-up bloodwork
  6. Explain the use of the new BBFE Practitioner Order Sets for Adults and Adolescents in Emergency and Urgent Care settings in Saskatchewan
