Overview

The 2017 Oncology Conference includes plenary and small group sessions lead by staff and specialists of the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency. The target audience includes family, resident, and specialist physicians; nurses and nurse practitioners; pharmacists; physical therapists; social workers; dietitians; health sciences students; and radiation therapists. All health care professionals are welcome to attend.

Conference Goal
This conference will provide updates about current cancer and malignant and benign blood disorder guidelines, treatments, and controversies with a focus on management, care, survivorship and “thrivorship” in the adult population. Strategies and information to increase the capacity of the health care team to provide care in their home communities will be offered to strengthen team linkages.

Conference Learning Objectives
Participants will be able to:

  • Identify current cancer guidelines and challenges in the management of common cancers
  • Identify cancer related “red flags”, symptoms for diagnosis and/or recurrence of a cancer and appropriate investigations and referral.
  • Explain controversies in screening of common cancers
  • Summarize various steps from the time of diagnosis to the commencement of a definite treatment
  • Identify when referrals need to be made for diagnosis and/or recurrence
  • Explain treatment related common side effects and their management
  • Evaluate the contribution of the team approach to patient and family centered cancer care
  • Summarize the communication and planning required to guide the discussion about end of life care
