Course Overview:
The course will focus on CWC (Choosing Wisely Canada) elements, as they relate to in-hospital care and where appropriate, elements of preoperative care, diagnostic imaging and lab tests, as well as appropriate medications. It will also focus on models of care that are linked to superior and safer patient outcomes.
Target Audience:
Family Physicians, Specialist Physicians, Nurses, Residents, Students, Pharmacists, Diagnostic Imaging, Laboratory Medicine, and all other health care professionals.
Course Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:
- recognize the limitations of various clinical investigations and apply this understanding to provide high-value care;
- identify the importance of communication with the lab specialist and the positive value this communication/collaboration has in terms of tailoring patient care, limiting needless testing and exposure to risk that is otherwise unnecessary;
- identify the costs of investigation and treatments (lab, radiologic, antibiotic or otherwise) that are involved in the care of their patients and apply this knowledge to the appropriate investigations in future; and
- select investigations for the patient’s condition that integrate current evidence to reduce unnecessary risks to patient safety.
Course Modules:
Module 1: Child Health - Say Yes to the Less: Making it Easier to Choose Wisely in Paediatrics Presented by - Dr.Jeremy Friedman ~ 50 minutes

Learners will be able to:
- Appreciate why unnecessary care is important & what drives it.
- Learn strategies to enable implementation of Choosing Wisely principles.
Module 2: The Clinical and Economic Impacts of Choosing the Incorrect Diagnostic Imaging Technique- Presented by: Dr. Brent Burbridge, Dr. Erika Penz, Dr. Ingrid Wirth ~ 40 minutes
Objectives
Learners will be able to:
- Describe Choosing Wisely Canada’s recommendation regarding the role of CT PE scans in patients with low pre-test probability of PE.
- Review the Thrombosis Canada guideline
- Discuss the results of a QI project evaluating adherence to Choosing Wisely Canada recommendations, and the potential clinical and economic costs.
- Incorporate the key points of this discussion into your clinical practice for patients with possible PE.
Module 3: Optimal Lab Utilization ~ 66 minutes

Module 4: Choosing Wisely for Microbiology Testing: Tips for Providers - Presented by: Dr. Camille Hamula ~ 43 minutes

- Understand appropriate use of surveillance cultures for Antibiotic Resistant Organisms.
- Describe appropriate specimen collection and testing stewardship for Clostridium difficile infection.
- Discuss how to collect the best samples for bacterial culture
Module 5: The Role of Laboratory Medicine Resource Stewardship in Value-Based Healthcare Presented by: Dr. AbdulRazaq Sokoro ~ 55 minutes

- Define common terminologies in resource stewardship.
- Understand the role of laboratory medicine resource stewardship in value-based healthcare.
- Understand the importance of resource stewardship training in medical education.

Module 7: Pumping Iron: Improving Managment of Iron Deficiency in Pregnancy - Presented by: Dr. Christine Lett ~ 14 minutes

- Recognize iron deficiency and anemia is common and places patients at an increased risk of adverse events.
- Formulate a plan for treating pregnant patients with iron deficiency and anemia.
Module 8: Choosing Wisely: Transfusion - Presented by: Dr. Ryan Lett ~ 12 minutes

- To review the outcomes of the Choosing Wisely Toolkit as applied to practice in Regina.
Module 9: Right Patient, Right Time, Right Place - Presented by: Dr. Segun Oyedokun ~ 16 minutes

- Understand the process of obtaining Ultrasound (US) imaging in Saskatoon emergency department
- Discuss development and implementation of a new clinical pathway for US imaging
Module 10: Effectiveness of Pre-Operative Per-Protocol Selective Testing Versus Routine Testing Presented by: Dr. Rabia Shahid ~ 10 minutes

Learners will be able to:
- Understand the utility of testing before elective joint replacement surgery
- Learnings from the quality improvement initiative to reduce unnecessary testing
- Discuss the barriers during implementation
Module 11: Antimicrobial Stewardship - Presented by: Dr. Shaqil Peermohamed ~ 45 minutes
Objectives
Learners will be able to:
- Describe the rationale and value for implementation of an antimicrobial stewardship program
- Highlight the Choosing Wisely and Antibiotic Wisely campaigns as well as novel ideas designed to help optimize antimicrobial use
- Present findings regarding the impact of a novel antimicrobial stewardship app on antimicrobial prescribing practices
