About

Heart of the Prairies: Cardiologoy Conference and ECG Workshop is Saskatchewan’s premier two‑day interdisciplinary cardiovascular education event. It brings together Cardiologists, Physicians, Pharmacists, Nurses, and Emergency Responders from across urban, rural, and remote settings to share innovations, strengthen collaboration, and advance patient‑centred cardiovascular care.

Day 1 features an immersive, hands‑on ECG evening workshop designed to build practical interpretation skills across high‑yield clinical scenarios. Day 2 hosts the full Heart of the Prairies Cardiology Conference, delivering comprehensive updates across prevention, electrophysiology, heart failure, acute coronary syndromes, multidisciplinary care, and emerging therapies.

Together, these two days offer an integrated learning experience that supports excellence across the full continuum of cardiovascular medicine—equipping clinicians with actionable knowledge and strengthening the collaborative care networks that serve Saskatchewan patients.

Note: Learners may sign up for the ECG Workshop, the Cardiology Conference, or both.

Heart of the Prairies was co-developed with the University of Saskatchewan College of Medicine, Division of Cardiology, and has been designed to ensure scientific integrity, objectivity, and balanced, evidence-informed learning for all participants.

Content

This interactive evening workshop is designed to strengthen practical electrocardiogram (ECG) interpretation skills through a blend of plenary teaching, case-based discussions, and small‑group learning. Learners will participate in a variety of hands‑on and collaborative activities, with groups intentionally organized by skill level (beginner and advanced) to promote balanced engagement and meaningful learning.

Throughout the workshop, participants will work through common and high‑yield clinical scenarios, including differentiation of key arrhythmias (e.g., AFib vs VT), recognition of pediatric and frequently encountered ECG patterns, and the application of structured interpretation approaches to real‑world practice. Emphasis is placed on clinical reasoning, interactive dialogue, and safe arrhythmia recognition across diverse patient populations.

Ample opportunities for discussion, questions, and peer collaboration are built into the session. Refreshments and snacks will be provided.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this workshop, learners will be able to:

  1. Differentiate atrial fibrillation from ventricular tachycardia on ECG.
  2. Interpret common adult and pediatric arrhythmias using a structured ECG approach.
  3. Apply ECG findings to guide initial clinical decision-making in arrhythmia cases.

The Heart of the Prairies Conference is a comprehensive cardiovascular education event delivering up‑to‑date insights across prevention, electrophysiology, heart failure, acute coronary syndromes, multidisciplinary care, and emerging therapies.

Through a combination of plenary lectures and rotating concurrent sessions, participants will explore contemporary evidence, shared decision‑making approaches, palliative considerations in cardiology, and evolving pharmacologic strategies. All learners will have the opportunity to participate in each of the concurrent learning sessions through structured rotation, ensuring equitable exposure to the full breadth of content.

The program is intentionally designed to support integrated, patient‑centred cardiovascular care across the entire continuum of disease. Sessions emphasize practical, clinically relevant strategies that clinicians can immediately apply across diverse practice settings.

Breakfast, lunch, and refreshments will be provided throughout the day to support an engaging, interactive learning environment.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this conference, learners will be able to:

  1. Evaluate contemporary management strategies for heart failure, electrophysiologic disorders, and acute coronary syndromes.
  2. Integrate multidisciplinary and novel therapies into comprehensive cardiovascular care plans.
  3. Incorporate shared decision-making and palliative principles into cardiology practice.
  4. Receive an update on the Division of Cardiology and the status of cardiovascular medicine in Saskatchewan.
