The Saskatchewan Ministry of Health, Medical Services Branch (MSB), in collaboration with the Saskatchewan Medical Association (SMA) and the Division of Continuing Medical Education (CME), College of Medicine, University of Saskatchewan, have partnered to develop the Physician Billing Online Course. This course provides physicians, medical office assistants, and other healthcare professionals with foundational knowledge and practical tools to navigate the Physician Payment Schedule, submit accurate claims, and ensure compliance with billing requirements in Saskatchewan.

 Online Modules:

The Physician Billing course offers detailed information in the following areas:

Module 1: Introduction to Medical Services Branch & Legislative Billing Obligations
Module 2: Claim Submission and Reconciliation
Module 3: Interpretation and Application of Service Codes and Billing Criteria
Module 4: Documentation Requirements
Module 5: Electronic Medical Record (EMR) Utilization
Module 6: Payment Integrity - Audit

Modules include practical case examples that walk you through how to approach different billing situations. You’ll also have access to a downloadable PDF with key resources. Each module ends with a short quiz to check your understanding.

 Target Audience:
Physicians and billing clerks. Other health care professionals are welcome.

 Course Objectives

By the end of this pilot course, learners will be able to:

• Explain the professional, legal, and ethical obligations associated with billing.
• Analyze the fundamental aspects of the Physician Payment Schedule, including referenced regulations, definitions, billing requirements, and service code descriptors.
• Describe the core principles underpinning documentation requirements.
• Apply service codes to actual billing scenarios.
• Demonstrate the process of submitting claims, reconciling rejected and recovered claims, and navigating the appeal process.

Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada: This activity is an Accredited Self-Assessment Program (Section 3) as defined by the Maintenance of Certification (MOC) Program of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and approved by the Continuing Medical Education Division, University of Saskatchewan. You may claim a
maximum of 2.75 hours (credits are automatically calculated).

The College of Family Physicians of Canada: This activity meets the certification criteria of the College of Family Physicians of Canada and has been certified by the Continuing Medical Education Division, University of Saskatchewan for up to 7.0 Mainpro+® Certified Activity credits.

Other Healthcare Professionals: Participation in this conference may be included as part of the continuing education and competence programs established by individual professional associations.
