Overview

Join us for a morning of thought‑provoking presentations that examine emerging perspectives in medicine, integrative health, and wellness. This lecture series features expert lecturers who will explore current trends, evidence‑informed practices, and integrated approaches to health and wellness within clinical, academic, and community settings.

Overall Learning Objectives

At the end of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Assess emerging trends and challenges in medicine, public health, and healthcare delivery.
  • Apply strategies to support personal and professional wellbeing within clinical and community practice.
  • Integrate evidence-informed, patient-centered approaches, including complementary and conventional modalities, to enhance health outcomes.

Target Audience

Session Title: Vaccine Hesitancy and Public Health Communication
Presenter: Dr. Julie Kryzanowski

At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the public health implications of vaccine hesitancy and the re-emergence of previously controlled infectious diseases.
  • Describe how misinformation, disinformation and gaps in knowledge contribute to vaccine hesitancy.
  • Examine the role of sociocultural beliefs and norms in shaping attitudes towards vaccination.

Presenter: Dr. Scott Adams

At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Evaluate the credibility, limitations, and risks of AI generated medical information commonly encountered by patients.
  • Explain how AI mediated health information shapes patient decision making and affects the patient–health care provider relationship and physician wellness.
  • Apply effective communication strategies to address AI related medical misinformation and support safe, informed patient decisions in clinical encounters.

Session Title: Finding Our Way Back in Healthcare: Practical and Evidence-based steps from Burnout and Moral Injury to Compassion Satisfaction
Presenter: Dr. Bryan Macleod

At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Identify key evidence that illustrates the significant health challenges facing healthcare communities and their patients in these uncertain times.
  • Analyze the core components of self-compassion as demonstrated in a reflective exercise and examine associations between self-compassion training and improvements in burnout, secondary stress, compassion satisfaction, and self-compassion outcomes
  • Apply at least one practical approach using wellness infographics to engage clinicians in well-being.

Speakers

Dr. Julie Kryzanowski

Originally from Humboldt, Dr. Kryzanowski began her public health career working at the Saskatchewan Disease Control Laboratory (now the Roy Romanow Public Laboratory) while a student at the University of Regina. Following medical school and residency training, she was happy to return home to Saskatchewan and worked as a Medical Health Officer in Saskatoon prior to becoming the first Senior Medical Health Officer for the Saskatchewan Health Authority. She currently works clinically as the Deputy Chief Medical Health Officer for Saskatchewan and holds roles with the Division of Public Health and Preventive Medicine focused on developing and improving physician practice through education, research, and quality improvement. Outside of work, she enjoys exploring in and around the city on her bike and camping with her family.

Dr. Scott Adams

Scott J. Adams, MD, PhD, FRCPC is a cardiothoracic radiologist and assistant professor of radiology at the University of Saskatchewan. Dr. Adams completed his MD, PhD, and residency at the University of Saskatchewan, studying as a Vanier Scholar and receiving the Governor General’s Gold Medal. He completed clinical and research fellowships in cardiovascular and thoracic imaging at Stanford University, Harvard Medical School, and Massachusetts General Hospital, and completed a Master of Education degree at the University of Toronto. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. He is currently UGME Program Director in the College of Medicine’s Department of Medical Imaging and serves as Artificial Intelligence in UGME Lead. He is Director of Research for the Virtual Health Hub and leads the Laboratory for Medical AI. His research program is funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and Saskatchewan Health Research Foundation, and he is a past recipient of the Artificial Intelligence Health Research Fellowship from Innovative Medicines Canada, Amis Fellowship in Quality and Safety from the American College of Radiology, and President’s Award from the American Roentgen Ray Society. Passionate about advancing healthcare through health research, medical education, and leadership, Dr. Adams has served on the board of directors of the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame and Canadian Association for Medical Education. He has helped advance artificial intelligence and patient and family-centred care through his research and service on committees of the Canadian Association of Radiologists, American College of Radiology, and North American Society for Cardiovascular Imaging. 

Bryan MacLeod

Bryan MacLeod is a Chronic Pain Physician and Full Professor at NOSM U (www.nosm.ca ).  He is a very active researcher in clinician wellness, and works to promote clinician health with his MSC North Research Team

Bryan cut his teeth as a rural family doc in Marathon Ontario after graduating CCFP from NOMP back in The Dark Ages. And has since held clinical leadership roles as Medical Director Faculty Development (NOMP), Medical Director Palliative Care (TBRHSC), Medical Director Chronic Pain (SJCG), and Medical Director ECHO North.

Bryan is a Recovering Over-Achiever and humble Mindful Self-Compassion enthusiast, melding his passion for a life in medicine with a need for all of us to have a healthier balanced way forward.

When most balanced Bryan is a passionate cyclist, very involved in local theatre and helps run Thunder Bay’s only Improv Theatre Club (you are forewarned).
